Museum of Photographic Arts Visit 12/5/17

The visit to the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) was visually, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally stimulating. Sarayne, our guide, was warm and inviting. She gave us opportunities to talk about ourselves, learn more about each other, give our thoughts and opinions about what we saw, and how we interpreted what we saw.

One of the current rotating exhibitions on display until 2/11/18 is called "Point/Counterpoint: Contemporary Mexican Photography" and features works created from 2000-2015. The photographs "reflect the cultural transformation currently underway in the country....and explore the intersection between perceived traditional Mexican culture and the actuality of contemporary life in Mexico." In addition to the visual displays, MOPA hosts a series of community conversations to bring together experts to speak about themes found in the exhibition. Upcoming discussions will be held on 12/14/17 and 1/18/18.

Another exhibition "Defining Boundaries" displays student artists from 100 K-12 students from San Diego County and Tijuana and runs until 2/27/18.  The works include explorations of "boundaries as physical barriers, positive hurdles, and emotional restraints." I really enjoyed seeing how talented these artists are at such young ages and am glad that they have an opportunity to foster their blossoming creativity, with hopefully many more such occasions.

Besides displaying photographic arts, MOPA has a theater that hosts film festivals and events, a library, a store that sells accessories, apparel, books and more, and also presents classes.  Visit their website www.MOPA.org to learn more about all they have to offer.

Balboa Park is truly our city's crown jewel and being able to visit the park, whether to visit a museum, stroll the gardens, see a concert or play or grab a bite to eat is a terrific way to spend the day. Although I had been to the park many times before, prior to visiting MOPA I did not know that the Balboa Park Senior Lounge existed across the walkway from the Museum. You can relax and get a free cup of coffee or tea while you are there and pick up a copy of The Scroll, a newsletter that provides information about senior services, day trips, special events and programs offered by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department.
